Recommended Books on Model Rocketry
Thursday, 04 June 2009 23:18

There are volumes of information about model rocketry accessible via the Internet, but sometimes you wish there was a single reference that brought it all together in one place.  There are a few good rocketry books on the market that do precisely that.

You aren’t likely to find any good books about model rocketry books in your local book shop.  You’ll probably have to order them one on-line from one of these places:
Suburban Rocketry online rocketry store (Sydney, Australia)

NAR Technical Services online book store (USA)

  Amazon online bookshop (USA)

Here are the three most popular books about model rocketry:

Model Rocket design & construction (3rd edition)
Author : Tim Van Milligan
Published : 2008
328 pages
453 black-and-white photographs and illustrations

This is a modern book containing detailed information about designing and building low power and mid power rockets.  While some of the content is contained in Tim's free Peak of Flight newsletters, the book contains more information and brings it all together in one handy reference.

This book is suitable for a 10-year-old novice rocketeer, but it also contains enough detailed information to serve as an excellent reference for experience enthusiasts.

Handbook of Model Rocketry (7th edition)
Author : G. Harry Stine and Bill Stine
Published : 2004
384 pages
Lots of black-and-white illustrations and photographs

This is a classic guide written by the "father of model rocketry".  It is still the official handbook of the National Association (NAR) in America.

This book was first printed in 1965 and this 7th edition was released in 2004.  It looks kind of old and theoretical, but it thoroughly covers the fundamentals of building and launching low power rockets. Every serious rocketry enthusiast has a copy of this book lying around somewhere.
